We are best known for our DUST WAND wool dusters, which are used by contract cleaners and hotel maintenance staff around the world. What is medical sheepskin and who is it for?
Medical sheepskin is Australian sheepskin that has been specially treated and processed for healthcare use. It is commonly used to help prevent pressure sores and bedsores in patients who spend extended time in bed or in a wheelchair. The natural properties of sheepskin, including moisture wicking, temperature regulation, and pressure distribution, make it an effective comfort aid. Medical sheepskin products are suitable for seniors, individuals recovering from surgery, and anyone with mobility limitations. We carry a full line of medical sheepskin at our store and online.
How do I care for and clean my sheepskin products?
Most sheepskin products should be spot cleaned with a damp cloth and a mild, pH-neutral detergent. Allow them to air dry away from direct heat or sunlight, as excessive heat can stiffen the leather. For sheepskin slippers, you can sprinkle baking soda inside to absorb odours and brush the wool with a soft-bristle brush to restore fluffiness. Avoid machine washing unless the product label specifically says it is safe to do so. We also carry sheepskin cleaning accessories in our store to help you maintain your products.
Are sheepskin products good for babies?
Sheepskin is an excellent choice for babies. It is naturally breathable, which helps regulate your baby’s temperature and prevents overheating. The soft wool fibres cushion and support, making sheepskin ideal for stroller liners, crib underlays, and play mats. Sheepskin is also naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites and bacteria. Our sheepskin for babies collection is designed with safety and comfort in mind.
Are your sheepskin products made in Canada?
Yes. World of Sheepskin manufactures products right here in Winnipeg, Canada. Our factory is located at the same address as our retail boutique on Dufferin Avenue. We use high-quality Australian sheepskin as our primary material and craft finished products locally. When you visit our store, we are happy to show you the manufacturing process firsthand.
What makes sheepskin better than synthetic alternatives?
Sheepskin offers several natural advantages over synthetic materials. It is naturally breathable, meaning it regulates temperature by keeping you warm in winter and cool in summer. Sheepskin wicks moisture away from the skin, is naturally fire resistant, and is extremely durable with proper care. Synthetic fleece and faux shearling do not offer the same level of temperature regulation or moisture management, and they tend to wear out faster. Genuine sheepskin also conforms to the shape of your body over time, providing a custom fit.
Can I visit your factory and see how products are made?
Absolutely. We welcome visitors to our factory boutique at 250 Dufferin Ave in Winnipeg. A visit to our store is a unique experience where you can see our manufacturing process, browse our full product range in person, and speak with our team. Many locals and tourists consider it a must-stop shopping destination in Winnipeg. If you have questions before visiting, call us at 204-586-8097 or toll-free at 1-800-665-0202.
What is the difference between sheepskin, shearling and lambskin?
Sheepskin and shearling both come from sheep, and are often used interchangeably. Sheepskin is generally the hide of an adult sheep with the wool still attached at full length. Shearling specifically comes from a lamb that has been shorn once, so the wool is shorter, more uniform and softer. At World of Sheepskin, we carry products made from both sheepskin and shearling, including jackets, slippers, and mittens. The key thing to look for is whether the product uses genuine sheep hide rather than synthetic imitation. Lambskin refers to the hide that has been split from the wool. It is very soft, and is used for jackets. We have a few models of jackets in our store.
Is sheepskin hypoallergenic?
Yes, genuine sheepskin is naturally hypoallergenic. The lanolin present in wool fibres helps resist dust mites, bacteria, mould, and mildew, making sheepskin a good choice for people with allergies or sensitive skin. This is one of the reasons medical sheepskin is widely used in healthcare settings. Our sheepskin products retain these natural properties, so they are suitable for the whole family, including babies and individuals with skin sensitivities.
Can sheepskin get wet? Is it waterproof?
Sheepskin is naturally water resistant but it is not fully waterproof. The wool fibres can absorb a small amount of moisture without feeling wet, and light rain or snow will not damage sheepskin products. Depending on the product, you should avoid soaking or submerging sheepskin in water. For example, never wash a coat or jacket. But medical skins can be machine washed. If your sheepskin item does get wet, let it air dry naturally at room temperature away from direct heat sources like radiators or hair dryers. Never put wet sheepskin in a clothes dryer, as the heat can stiffen and shrink the leather.
How long do sheepskin slippers last?
With proper care, a quality pair of genuine sheepskin slippers can last several years. Most well-made sheepskin slippers will give you three to five years of regular daily wear, and even longer if you rotate them with another pair. Signs that it is time to replace your slippers include flattened wool that no longer springs back, a worn-through sole, or a noticeable loss of warmth and cushioning. Our slippers are manufactured in Canada using genuine sheepskin and durable soles, so they are built to hold up over time.
Do you offer gift certificates?
Yes, World of Sheepskin offers gift certificates that make a great gift for birthdays, holidays, or any occasion. Gift certificates can be purchased at our Winnipeg store or through our website at worldofsheepskin.com. They can be redeemed for any product we carry, both in-store and online.
